SphygmoCor XCEL

Pulse Wave Analysis and Pulse Wave Velocity

High blood pressure increases one’s risk for heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

The blood pressure measurement taken in the arm (brachial blood pressure) can be an inaccurate measure of what is actually going on deeper inside the body.  The SphygmoCor XCEL Pulse Wave Analysis Test provides a measurement of the central blood pressure, the blood pressure as blood is pumped out of the heart and into the major blood vessels.  This central blood pressure is an important number to monitor and treat as it reflects the pressure that is being directly experienced by the heart, aorta, brain and kidneys.

The SphygmoCor XCEL Pulse Wave Velocity Test provides a measurement of the arterial stiffness.  Our arteries become stiffer as we age and as a result of certain health conditions such as high blood pressure, plaque deposition, and inflammation.  Stiffer arteries can exacerbate cardiovascular disease as they cannot relax as well and thus transmit high blood pressures to the heart, brain and kidneys.  There is a direct correlation of increased arterial stiffness and cardiovascular disease.  Arterial stiffness can be improved with lifestyle changes, supplements, and prescription medications.

This test takes 15-20 minutes to perform and costs $100.

You will get your results which will include your central blood pressure measurement and your arterial stiffness score.
