Front Range Functional medicine offers 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
We use the Oscar2 System from SunTech medical, the gold standard in measuring 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure.
Why is this important?
We know that elevated blood pressure plays a major role in multiple disease processes including coronary arterial disease, renal disease, congestive heart failure and diabetes.
In the office we can obtain just a single, point in time, blood pressure assessment. The Oscar2 System allows us to obtain repeat blood pressure measurements throughout the day and the night. It is useful in diagnosing and treating:
White Coat Hypertension – When an individual has falsely elevated blood pressure when in the medical office but has normal blood pressures at other times. Without this information a person may be placed on unnecessary blood pressure medications.
Masked Hypertension – When an individual has normal blood pressure when in the medical office but has elevated blood pressures at other times during the day. Without this information we would miss the diagnosis of hypertension in the individual.
Dipping Status – It is normal for blood pressure to drop slightly, about 10mmHg, when asleep. Altered dipping status can indicate increased risk. For example, persons who are non-dippers or who are reverse dipper (have increased BP at night) may have an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity. Persons who are extreme dippers may be at increased risk of ischemic stroke. This information helps us to tailor treatment.
