Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a technique that uses electrical impedance, the opposition to the flow of an electric current through body tissue, to estimate various aspects of body composition.
The seca mBCA 514 is a medical body impedance analyzer that uses 8 different points to precisely measure body composition. It has been validated against the gold standard of measurement.
Using this machine we can measure a variety of things that are important to health and wellbeing including:
• Total fat mass
• Visceral fat measurement (VAT or visceral adipose tissue) – this is hidden fat beneath the peritoneal lining that is inflammatory and increases the risk for heart disease
• Fat free body mass
• Total body water content
• Skeletal muscle mass – in each extremity and in the torso
• Phase angle – a direct measure of cell membrane integrity and cellular health. It can be affected by such things as toxins, diet, sleep, stress, and physical activity.
